Marco playing a chord on his ukulele

Your first song is closer than you think.

Hi, I'm Marco, and I'm so happy you're here.

For years I thought the ukulele was a toy. I was completely wrong. It's the most generous instrument I know: your first chord takes one finger, and within minutes you're playing real music.

I made Ukulele Journey for everyone who has always wanted to play something, and wondered if they'd left it too late. You haven't. Grab your ukulele, and let's start together.

Keep playing, Marco

Picture this.

It's a rainy Wednesday. You've had a long day. Instead of scrolling your phone, you pick up your ukulele, strum four strings, and boom. Instant sunshine.

What if all of this was
a few weeks away?

42LESSONS
  1. Play your first song tonight, not next month

  9. Be the one who gets asked to "play something" when the family is together
  10. Pick up your ukulele every day because you want to
Wish you were here. Marco

But for most beginners, it goes a lot more like this…

Sound familiar?

Tap a card.

It's not the ukulele.
And it's not you.

You just started at the wrong end. You started with a song, when you needed to start with your first chord. Get the order right, and the ukulele is the quickest instrument there is to fall in love with.

Ukulele Journey with Marco Cirillo, beginner course

Meet Ukulele Journey.

42 video lessons, in the exact order I'd teach you if you were sitting here with me. Every lesson is one small step, and the chords click into place like Lego blocks.

You start before you've even played a note: choosing your ukulele, holding it, tuning it (there's an app that does it for you). Then your first chord, your first song, and a journey all the way to your first bar chords.

  • Your first song within minutes, not weeks
  • Songs you actually want to play, from day one
  • No music reading, ever
  • Go at your own pace. Every lesson is yours for life

See every finger.

Every lesson is filmed from three angles at once: me, my strumming hand and my fretting hand, up close, with the chord shown on screen. You can copy exactly what my fingers are doing.

Your journey, stop by stop.

Here's what you'll be playing, and when.

DEPARTURE · LESSON 1

Choose it. Hold it. Tune it.

Everything before your first note, done in a few short lessons. The tuning app does the hard part.

LESSON 9

Your first chord. One finger.

The moment it actually sounds like music is the best feeling in the world.

LESSON 13

Your first song: A Horse With No Name

Two chords, still with one finger. Within minutes, you're playing a song.

LESSON 15

Wake Me Up, Avicii

Add F, and suddenly you're playing a song everyone in the room knows.

LESSON 18

The Stand By Me rhythm

The romantic strum that makes four chords sound like a record.

LESSON 25

Can't Help Falling In Love, Elvis Presley

Five chords, and the most beautiful song for beginners. This is the one people ask you to play again.

LESSON 28

I'm Yours, Jason Mraz

Bright chord, bright song. The one most people picture on a ukulele.

LESSON 29

Fingerpicking

Strumming isn't all there is. Pick out the notes, and the ukulele starts to sing.

LESSON 33

A duet with me

I play the chords, you play the melody. Your first time playing music with someone else.

LESSON 35

The D chord. Hundreds of songs.

One new shape, and a huge part of the songbook opens up to you.

LESSON 37

Three Little Birds, Bob Marley

The happiest song on the ukulele, and proof of how far you've come.

DESTINATION · LESSON 40

Your first bar chords

One shape, two chords, and the whole fretboard starts to open up. From here, you can go anywhere.

Seven chords. Two scales. Fingerpicking.
And not one note of written music.

Everything in one place.

Watch on your laptop, your tablet or your phone, propped up on the music stand. Every lesson is there the moment you join.

Learning the ukulele with Marco.

Ukulele Journey is brand new, so these are from students on Marco's other ukulele courses, in their own words.

Your teacher

Hi, I'm Marco.

I started classical guitar at eleven, graduated from the Conservatory of Salerno, and spent ten years playing and teaching in London. Today I teach guitar and ukulele from my studio near Naples, to students all over the world.

The ukulele came from Hawaii in the 1800s, and its name means "jumping flea", for the way players' fingers hopped across the strings. Since then it has jumped into the hands of George Harrison, Billie Eilish and Eddie Vedder. This tiny instrument can do big things, and I built Ukulele Journey to show you how.

Is Ukulele Journey right for you?

I want it to work for you, so here's the honest answer.

It's for you if

  • You've never played an instrument, and you've always wanted to
  • You bought a ukulele years ago, and it's been in the cupboard since
  • You want to play real songs, not exercises
  • You play guitar and want a second instrument (you already know four of the chord shapes)
  • You've got a few minutes a day, not a few hours
  • You're buying a ukulele for someone, and you want it to get played

It's probably not for you if

  • You already strum the open chords comfortably. My Daily Uke Challenge is the next step for you
  • You want to learn to read sheet music. Here you'll use chord diagrams, never notation

A few good questions.

I've never played any instrument. Is this really for me?

Yes. Lesson 1 assumes you know nothing, not even how to hold it. That's exactly who I made it for.

Am I too old to start?

No. The ukulele is light, the strings are soft, and the first chords take one finger. One of my ukulele students is in his eighties, and he plays at his own pace.

I don't have a ukulele yet. Which one should I buy?

Lesson 3 walks you through choosing one, and my free Ukulele Buying Guide covers sizes, budgets and what to check before you buy.

Which ukulele sizes does it work with?

Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles in standard tuning. The course doesn't cover the baritone ukulele.

How long are the lessons, and how much time do I need?

Each lesson is 5 to 10 minutes. A few minutes of playing a day beats one long session on Sunday. There's no schedule, so you go at your own speed.

Do I need to read music?

No. Not now, not ever. You'll learn to read chord diagrams, which are little pictures of where your fingers go, in a single lesson.

I already play guitar. Will it be too easy?

The first lessons will be. Fingerpicking with that high G string, the duet and the bar chords won't, and you'll already know four of the chord shapes from guitar.

Can I buy it as a gift?

Yes. Choose the gift option at checkout. It makes a lovely present for anyone who has always wanted to learn, and it means the ukulele under the tree actually gets played.

Is it a subscription?

No. One payment, and it's yours for life.

What if it isn't for me?

Email me within 60 days and I'll refund you. I'd rather you try it than wonder.

What comes after Ukulele Journey?

Lesson 41 shows you. For most people it's my Daily Uke Challenge, a new weekly routine every Monday for a year.

Go on.
Play something.

It's a Sunday afternoon, and your family is around the table. Somebody says, "Go on, play something." And you do. Three Little Birds. And everybody starts singing.

That's what Ukulele Journey is for.
